New Year New Gear: Winter 2021

We’re two months into 2021, and a new year of adventures calls for new gear. To help get you started, we’ve compiled a list of some of our Camp Gal favorites, both for staying in (safety first, gals) and for hitting the trails (fresh air is key to survival, especially right now).

Staying In

Picture this: you’re cozy inside on a snowy Saturday, homemade latte in hand, and flipping through a travel book by crackling candlelight. Create your own restful moment with some of our favorite additions to this aesthetic:

Snag a candle inspired by your favorite National Park, and support the parks service at the same time! Candles are poured in Nashville, TN, smell amazing, and have the incomparable wooden wicks — an easy way to bring the forest into your home or apartment.

A stylish way to keep camp drinks warm or cold, whether you’re huddled around the fire or headed to the beach. P.S. If you want to be really cool, you can get a mug with the Camp Gals logo!

This book is a collection of beautiful photographs from around the world that will inspire wanderlust in anyone, but especially in a Camp Gal. Follow Emilie’s travels to gain perspective on how to sustainably travel and responsibly soak in the beauties of our natural world.

Milk frothers are a recent Camp Gal favorite. Turns out you can treat yourself to coffeeshop lattes from the comfort of your own home — great news for our wallets and also our health in 2021.

We are still in a pandemic after all, and wearing a mask is unavoidable. While have been doing our best to make sure our adventures involve maximum time outdoors, being indoors is often inevitable. So whether you are on a plane, grabbing some hot chocolate, or even hiking on a busier trail, these Athleta masks are absolutely the best choice. We are in love because they are lightweight, breathable, and adjustable. It also doesn’t hurt that you can throw them in the washing machine!

Surviving What’s Left of Winter

As much as we love staying home, we know fresh air is essential for our sanity. Hiking and camping in the winter can be a dream, but you need the right gear to stay warm on your adventures!

Though the Camp Gals prefer to unplug on girls trip weekends, maintaining a steady phone battery is essential for capturing the moment (and for searching nearby coffee shops, of course) so staying fully charged is a must. We find that cold weather tends to drain our phone batteries QUICK, so making sure there is a charger available in case of emergency is always a good idea too.

These spikes are essential for any snowy, icy hike. Our resident PNW Camp Gal uses these on a weekly basis to safely hike to the beautiful Washington winter views. If you are a runner or “urban hiker”, these are also  great for those days where the neighborhood sidewalks are icy.

If you have ever used the traditional disposable hand warmers (i.e. “HotHands”), you understand how nice these are to have on a cold winter day. However, it always takes a bit of time for them to warm up and they aren’t the most eco-friendly. One of our newest gear discoveries is this electronic handwarmer. You can charge it ahead of your next outdoor adventure, and it will warm your hands in seconds when you’re out playing in the cold. As a bonus, it can charge your phone as well!

Great for any winter hiking or camping trip, or a cozy night at home. You really cannot go wrong with this brand, and we have found any style of Smart Wool sock has always been worth the price! Rachel wore this brand while skiing in three degree, Rocky Mountain winter weather this year. Her toes were toasty warm the entire day! RUN don’t walk to purchase these socks.

REI Co-Op Base Layers

A quote that comes to mind every winter for us is, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothes”. We believe there is definitely truth to this statement, and having a solid set of base layers is essential for enjoying cold winter days. We have found REI makes base layers that are effective, affordable, and there are a variety of cute colors. However, Smart Wool and Kari Traa are also some great brands to check out if you have a little more wiggle room in your budget.

If you are new to layering your clothes to efficiently combat the cold, check out the following articles by REI that break it down. We found these to be helpful when selecting our own layers this year:

Winter Sales

There is no better time to stock up for the next winter season than the end of the current one. Retailers tend to have their best sales for winter starting in March, which makes those base layers a little more affordable.
